Is Your Child Ready for the New School Year? 5 Reading Skills to Check at Home
Before school starts, ask yourself:
1. Can my child read words independently?
2. Can my child read familiar words automatically, or do they need to sound out every word?
3. Can my child read a short passage and tell me what it was about?
4. Can my child answer questions about what they read?
5. Does my child feel confident when reading?
Being “ready” for school doesn’t mean your child needs to be perfect. The goal is to understand what your child already knows and identify the skills that may benefit from additional practice.
Wondering where your child is in their reading development? A Fostering Student Growth Reading Check-Up can help identify strengths, areas for growth, and the next instructional steps.
By choosing to read with your child, you are helping them become a stronger and more confident reader."
